Gunman sentenced to 25 years for stray bullets that killed Brooklyn mother and her pit bull.
A 39-year-old man responsible for the tragic shooting that claimed the life of a Brooklyn mother and her pet dog has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter. The incident occurred on January 2, 2022, when Namel Colon exited a vehicle on Dekalb Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant and opened fire in an apparent attempt to strike a rival. Unfortunately, his reckless actions resulted in the death of 36-year-old Jennifer Ynoa, who was shopping with her dog, Blue, at a smoke shop.
In a last-minute decision, Colon chose to plead guilty to the charge before his trial was set to commence in Brooklyn Supreme Court. His plea deal, which included a sentence of 25 years, was accepted by Judge Phyllis Chu during a sentencing hearing on Tuesday. Video evidence depicted Colon rushing into the smoke shop, where he began firing at an individual believed to be his intended target. Tragically, Ynoa was caught in the crossfire as she attempted to escape the scene.
Witness accounts reveal the chaos that ensued when Ynoa tried to flee the store, ultimately collapsing just outside the entrance. Despite immediate medical attention, Ynoa was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to Brooklyn Hospital Center. Her pit bull, Blue, succumbed to injuries at the scene.
Colon fled the area in a red vehicle shortly after the shooting. Following a thorough investigation, law enforcement apprehended him approximately six weeks after the incident. During the brief sentencing, Colon expressed remorse, offering an apology to Ynoa’s family, although no family members spoke during the proceedings.
Ynoa, a health attendant by profession, resided in the Lafayette Gardens housing complex situated near where the incident took place. Friends and family members described her as a familiar face in the neighborhood and noted her regular visits to the smoke shop while walking Blue in the evenings.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez highlighted the severity of Colon’s actions, emphasizing the danger posed to the public during the shooting. He stated that the sentence serves as a vital reminder of the consequences associated with such acts of violence. The case underscores ongoing discussions around gun violence in urban areas and the impact on innocent lives caught in the crossfire.
