OC Board of Supervisors extends contracts with Meals on Wheels OC and Age Well Senior Services for continued support and services.

In a significant development for senior services in Orange County, the Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved a million funding extension for essential programs, including meal delivery, medical transportation, case management, and elder abuse prevention. This agreement, set to take effect after July 1, follows a contentious debate among supervisors earlier this year regarding the continuation of contracts with two key senior service providers, Meals on Wheels OC and Age Well Senior Services.

Initially, the board faced a split decision on May 19, with Supervisor Don Wagner expressing reservations over the contracts due to ongoing disputes involving the nonprofits. The county previously engaged in legal action against both organizations to recoup unspent pandemic relief funds allocated through the Great Plates program. The county reportedly sought over million from Meals on Wheels OC and more than million from Age Well Senior Services. The two nonprofits contended that they were advised to utilize these funds to maintain their services for seniors, leading to a settlement in 2023 that concluded with a mutual understanding, albeit not a full financial recovery for the county.

After reassessing the contracts, a revote conducted on June 9 showcased a shift in perspective, largely attributed to Wagner’s recent discussions with the new leadership at both nonprofit organizations. He indicated growing confidence in the direction of the services provided. Furthermore, he pointed out that county staff are preparing to seek proposals to enhance senior meal programs in the future.

Katrina Foley, a supervisor who advocated for the revote, emphasized the critical nature of these agreements, highlighting their potential impact. The renewal is poised to facilitate over 1.25 million meals for older adults, offer as many as 130,000 rides to medical appointments, and provide transportation support for approximately 23,000 seniors, thereby addressing vital needs within the community.

The renewed contracts extend beyond Meals on Wheels and Age Well, encompassing a broad range of support services from multiple local nonprofits and healthcare entities, including Abrazar, Community Legal Aid SoCal, Council on Aging Southern California, Hope Community Services, and Providence St. Jude Medical Center. These collaborations are essential to the health and well-being of older residents and demonstrate a commitment to addressing the critical needs of a vulnerable population.

As Orange County continues to navigate the complexities surrounding senior services, the unanimous decision reflects a focused effort to provide necessary resources and support for the county’s aging community. The organizations involved will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in ensuring that older adults receive the care and assistance they need during these challenging times.
