Patriots Day Parade honors retired Navy commander, surf icon, and community contributions.

On March 14, 2026, the picturesque coastal city of Laguna Beach celebrated its 59th annual Patriots Day Parade, an event designed to honor community spirit and national pride. This year’s celebration paid tribute to retired Navy Commander John C. Connolly, a distinguished pilot who played a pivotal role in numerous military missions, particularly during the Vietnam War. Connolly, a Laguna Beach resident, is a decorated veteran recognized for his bravery and dedication, having received two Navy Commendation Medals among other accolades.

The parade’s atmosphere was vibrant and festive, marked by the participation of military and school bands, civic organizations, and veterans’ groups. Attendees lined the streets, many proudly waving American flags. In a nod to local culture, the event also featured floats, classic automobiles, and various novelty acts that highlighted the community’s unique character.

The grand marshal for this year’s parade was surf legend Dick Metz, a pivotal figure in the surfing community who founded the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center in Orange County. Metz’s experiences, including his exhilarating surf adventures across various global locales, have left an indelible mark on surf culture. His contributions extend beyond the waves, inspiring the classic surf film “Endless Summer.”

The event also recognized local achievements, with several awards presented. Michael Lindsey received the Citizen of the Year accolade for his efforts in landscape restoration and environmental education. Junior citizens of the year, Estella Newton and Zachary Menter, were acknowledged for their contributions to the community, while David Nelson earned the Artist of the Year title and professional mountain biker Brian Lopes was named Athlete of the Year.

The parade started at Laguna Beach High School on Park Avenue, making its way down to Glenneyre Street before concluding at City Hall on Forest Avenue. This gratifying tradition embodies the essence of small-town America, uniting residents in celebration of their collective history and shared values.
