Six-year-old boy injured in Coney Island mass shooting had previously lost his father and aunt to gun violence.

Tragedy has befallen the family of a 6-year-old boy who was shot during a mass shooting at a Fourth of July family gathering in Coney Island, New York. The young victim, whose father was fatally shot prior to his birth and whose teenage aunt was murdered when he was a toddler, faces unimaginable trauma at a tender age.

On the night of July 4, around 10:35 PM, a gunman wearing a ski mask opened fire in the courtyard of a W. 30th Street apartment complex near Surf Avenue. This violent outburst resulted in eight people being shot, half of whom were children. The family’s festive Independence Day celebration turned into a scene of chaos and fear in an instant.

The boy’s mother, Ineisha Greene, recounted her son’s harrowing experience, revealing his awareness of the grave situation. She expressed deep concern regarding the ongoing threats posed by her son’s father’s enemies, leading her to guard her son’s identity from the media and social platforms for fear of potential reprisals.

The boy’s aunt, 17-year-old Keyaira Rattray-Brothers, made headlines in December 2022 after being shot during a revenge-driven shooting spree. This tragic cycle of violence has left the family grappling with profound loss and anxiety.

Following the shooting, authorities arrested Robert Smith, 44, charging him with attempted murder. During Smith’s arraignment at Brooklyn Criminal Court, prosecutors described the incident as a “mass shooting,” and he was ordered held without bail. The police have suggested gang retaliation may have been a motive, a claim Greene vehemently disputes, emphasizing that her young son could not possibly be involved in any gang-related activity at such a young age.

The family gathering, marked by a barbecue and fireworks, took a devastating turn when gunfire erupted, blending with the celebratory sounds of fireworks. Greene recalled the moment she realized the joyous occasion had turned tragic as she witnessed blood streaming from her cousin’s leg, prompting her to rush her son to safety.

The young boy suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, with the bullet passing through and hitting his wrist. Greene’s mother, Carlene Pearsall, was fortunately not seriously hurt but reported being grazed by bullets while waiting for food, leading to concern for her 14-year-old son, who was struck in both legs and may face a lengthy recovery.

Authorities confirmed that other victims included multiple minors and adults, with a 21-year-old woman in critical condition after being shot in the chest. All those affected were from the same extended family, with the exception of one family friend who is believed to have been the intended target of the attack.

This incident occurred just blocks away from where a local rapper was recently shot, further igniting concerns about gang violence in the area. However, Pearsall insists her family had no connections to the activities in question, imploring the authorities to recognize that they were undeserving victims of an act
