This three-day event was held earlier this month at the Mystic Woods glamping site, located approximately 70 miles from Atlanta, Georgia.
The festival, founded by Janelle Newell, aims to honor the creative spirit within the Black cosplay community. Newell was inspired by Black Fae Day, a global initiative celebrated annually in May, which recognizes Black individuals engaged in cosplay and fantasy-themed activities. According to Newell, a fae can refer to a wide array of mythical beings, including elves, mermaids, gnomes, and dragons. The festival is described as a gathering of a supportive and vibrant community, where all participants contribute through artistic expression, music, fashion, and overall positive energy.
Throughout the weekend, attendees engaged in a plethora of whimsical activities ranging from hip-hop opera and fire dancing to yoga, nature walks, and storytelling. Unique to this festival were interactive sessions of Dungeons and Dragons and a fashion show, which showcased the creativity and talent of the participants. The festival also provided an assortment of vendors selling food, clothing, and makeup, enhancing the immersive experience.
Attendees, such as Anniiyah Judd—a first-time camper—expressed their joy and satisfaction, characterizing the experience as both comforting and spiritually connecting. Participants felt a strong sense of community as they interacted and engaged with one another, sharing their artistic passions and supporting their fellow creatives.
