NYPD Shoots Man on Lower East Side of Manhattan
In a harrowing incident on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, officers from the New York Police Department fatally shot a 54-year-old man identified as Wei Chan. The encounter, which occurred around 4 p.m. on Sunday in an apartment building on Ludlow Street, was precipitated by Chan’s earlier attack on his elderly father within their residence.
According to NYPD reports, police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting an ongoing assault. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered a trail of blood leading up the staircase of the apartment building. As they ascended, they encountered Chan, who was armed with a butcher knife and was advancing toward them. Despite repeated commands for him to drop the weapon and show his hands, Chan reportedly continued to approach the officers, prompting them to discharge their firearms. He was struck at least once during the confrontation.
Emergency medical personnel quickly transported Chan to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Assistant Chief Melissa Eger addressed the situation in a press briefing, providing details about the unfolding events. Authorities recovered the knife at the scene and confirmed that the incident was recorded on body-worn cameras worn by the officers involved.
Chan did not have a criminal history; however, the NYPD revealed that he had a documented mental health history. His father, 75-year-old Cheung Chan, sustained a cut to his head during the earlier altercation and was also treated at Bellevue Hospital. Fortunately, his injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening.
Witnesses described the distressing scene, providing accounts of the rapid police response and the gunfire that followed. One observer recounted hearing several gunshots shortly after the police arrived and noted that emergency medics were seen performing CPR on Chan as he was transported from the building.
Following the shooting, multiple police officers were transported to an area hospital for evaluation, although the specifics of their condition remain undisclosed. The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is currently conducting an investigation into the incident, which has raised significant concerns about officer-involved shootings and mental health crises in urban environments.
This tragic event highlights ongoing issues concerning mental health treatment and the complexities law enforcement faces when responding to such emergencies. As investigations continue, the community remains on alert, grappling with the implications of this disturbing incident.
